Location: Nigeria

Job Purpose/Mission

  • The role entails being a part of the HR/HSE team located in Lagos, Nigeria, reporting to the Head of HR while having a matrix reporting line to the Global HSE Manager. The primary objective is to contribute to health, safety, and environmental monitoring, risk assessment, and hazard reduction strategies within Engie Energy Access operations, field sites, and company assets. The ideal candidate should possess strong attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and a proven record of achieving HSE objectives.

Key Responsibilities, Deliverables, and Activities

1. Support the execution of HSE Strategy:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environmental strategy in alignment with Nigerian legislation, ENGIE group H&S Rules, ISO 45001 standards, and industry best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE regulations and conduct internal and external HSE audits, monitoring compliance.
  • Enforce strict adherence to Engie HSE Group Rules during the construction phase by reviewing and auditing EPC activities.

2. Execution of HSSE Policies:

  • Create effective behavioral change strategies tailored for EEA employees, contractors, and third parties to minimize HSE incidents and related issues.
  • Stay informed about emerging issues and global trends to maintain a safe working environment for all stakeholders.

3. Reporting and Incident Follow-Up:

  • Collect high-quality data from all departments to establish robust health and safety metrics for reporting.
  • Participate in incident investigations and response plans to prevent future occurrences.
  • Establish confidential safety incident reporting platforms for employees.

4. Emergency and Crisis Response and Communication:

  • Ensure the implementation of emergency contingency measures and conduct practical exercises for readiness.
  • Respond promptly to HSE incidents/accidents and oversee the implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct field investigations of HSE accidents and public safety concerns, providing detailed event summaries for ENGIE HSE compliance.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of HSE experience in energy, construction, manufacturing, oil & gas, or mining sectors.
  • Degree/HND in occupational health, safety, & environmental management or a related discipline.
  • Relevant certifications in HSE (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO Certification, First Aid, HSE 1,2,3, etc.).
  • Profound knowledge of local and international HSE standards, laws, and regulations.
  • Ability to influence, inspire, and motivate individuals outside your direct responsibility.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools and relevant job-specific software.
  • Strong skills in risk management, hazard communication, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience in HSE management system implementation and improvement.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and negotiation skills.
