1). Project Director (Nigeria)

Location: Nigeria (Right to work in Nigeria required)

Reports to: Country Director

Contract: Fixed-term employment

Duration: Three years

Job Purpose

  • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Project Director to lead the implementation of a multi-year, multi-component Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) programme funded by the Gates Foundation and focused on reproductive health and family planning in Northern Nigeria.
  • This role ensures the project is delivered to a high standard, on time, and in alignment with the expectations of BBC Media Action and the Gates Foundation.
  • The Project Director is ultimately responsible for delivering the project activities.
  • They maintain oversight of interventions across the project, leading on media, civil society and government partnerships; overseeing creative processes; and providing strategic and technical guidance to specialist and project teams to ensure the project is delivered to high quality, within budget and to timeline
  • The role reports to the Country Director and will work closely with other implementing teams and the Senior Management Team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the effective and high-quality design, delivery, management, monitoring, evaluation and learning of a multimedia, multiplatform, multi-partner SBC intervention
  • Provide dynamic, inspirational leadership and management, including sound technical leadership across all aspects of the intervention.
  • Lead project activities – working closely with relevant stakeholders and other teams to deliver theproject and donor commitments while aligning with BBC editorial standards and values and MediaAction’s best practice.
  • Recruit, manage and develop the project team, ensuring that staff are appropriately inducted, trained and developed, and performance is appropriately managed.
  • Ensure that appropriate technical resources are available, drawing on internal and external expertise.
  • Anticipate and respond to risks and threats that could threaten project delivery.
  • Lead on the communication of project results, oversee the publication of reports and work to ensure take up amongst key stakeholders.
  • Serve as the organisation’s primary contact with the donor and other project stakeholders,
  • Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with partners and organisations for the benefit of the project, in line with BBC Media Action values.
  • Ensure the development of knowledge management systems and processes that help to collect, organize, store and share BBC Media Action Nigeria’s information/knowledge assets in a manner that such can be readily available, accessible and effectively used for the benefit of the organization.
  • Manage project budgets (including budget forecasting) to ensure the full and successful delivery of project outputs in accordance with that budget and in line with Media Action’s financial procedures and the funder’s operating guidelines.
  • Work closely with the Finance department to identify and resolve any potential financial issues.
  • Contribute to the development and writing of new proposals, or working as part of a larger team responding to donor requirements.
  • Ensure that project activities comply with BBC Media Action and donor standards around safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
  • The role will also lead or support to ensure that relevant safeguarding due diligence is conducted with any local partner organisations that may be working with vulnerable adults or children as part of the project and where any risks are identified, ensure that projects are designed to mitigate these risks.
  • Any other tasks assigned by Media Action to achieve project and organisational objectives.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Substantial experience of working in both the media and development sectors; with excellent understanding of reproductive and family planning projects, including the use of media and communication for behaviour and social change.
  • Able to build, influence and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders outside of a line management relationship.
  • Experience managing complex activities with demonstrated capacity to manage project/activities effectively.
  • Experience of overseeing budgets for a complex project.
  • Sound financial knowledge including cost versus benefit analysis and forecasting; the ability to see the wider implications of project performance.
  • Experienced controlling programme activity and providing decision support to allow prioritisation based on strategic contribution and use of resources (people, funds, time, etc.).
  • Confident public speaker with experience of presentations to colleagues, donors and stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good contextual understanding of Northern Nigeria and Hausa language.

2). Project Manager (Nigeria)

Job Purpose

  • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Project Manager to support the implementation of a reproductive and family planning project, making sure the agreed targets and objectives are met while ensuring the quality and alignment of project outputs to overall organisational objectives.
  • The Project Manager will also ensure that all relevant organisational departments and project partners are kept abreast of project commitments, timelines, strategies and changes to ensure adequate resource allocation and successful project implementation.
  • The Project Manager will also be responsible for the planning and coordination of project activities including financial management of the project and reporting on progress to the Project Director.
  • S/He will coordinate with key stakeholders and will ensure effective relationships and partnerships with a wide range of partners including broadcasters, NGOs, international development agencies, government coordinating bodies, and others.
  • The role reports to the Project Director and will work closely with other implementing teams and the Senior Management Team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning and implementation of all activities for the project in accordance with project budget and timelines.
  • Support the design and coordination of workshops, events, monitoring, evaluation and feedback/learning sessions, and work with relevant stakeholders to develop a comprehensive content roadmap for a multimedia, multiplatform, multi-partner SBC intervention
  • Monitor project activities – working closely with relevant stakeholders and other teams to deliver the project and donor commitments while aligning with BBC editorial standards and values and Media Action’s best practice.
  • Onboard and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with partners and organisations for the benefit of the project, in line with BBC Media Action values.
  • Contribute to the articulation of the project’s theory of change and ensure that key research findings are fed into project design and delivery.
  • Support the development of media content insofar as ensuring it links to the project ‘theory of change’ and intended development outcomes.
  • Work with selected partners to develop a holistic evidence-based communication strategy for an SBC intervention on FP informed by detailed analysis and segmentation of audiences.
  • Support the development of relevant project management tools that aid the effective design and implementation of project activities, to include but not limited to theory of change, logframe/results framework and workplans.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Strong technical understanding of and experience of working in reproductive and family planning projects, including media development and communications for behaviour and social change
  • Experience managing complex activities with demonstrated capacity to manage the project/activities effectively.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and inspire different teams or departments to work together to achieve goals.
  • Ability to forge strong working relations quickly and gain the trust of colleagues and partners, for example in other international NGOs, in government, in media houses, and elsewhere.

3). Research Officer

Location: Abuja, Nigeria (Right to work in Nigeria required)
Reports to: Head of Research & Learning
Contract: Fixed-term employment
Duration: One year

Job Purpose

  • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Research Officer to support the timely and efficient implementation of all aspects of research for BBC Media Action’s development communications projects in Nigeria, under the overall guidance of the Head of Research and Learning.
  • The Research Officer will work closely with the Head of Research and Learning or with Senior Research Officers (where applicable) to ensure that all research is technically well-designed, implemented, reported, and disseminated to a range of audiences within time, budget, and quality guidelines.
  • As such, the Research Officer is expected to have substantial experience in research methods and implementation.
  • The role reports to the Head of Research and Learning and will work closely with other implementing teams and the Senior Management Team.
  • The position is based in Abuja and will require travel to other states within the country.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the effective design, co-ordination and delivery of research for all BBC Media Action’s projects in Nigeria across a range of different thematic areas in which BBC Media Action works (e.g. health and governance), comprising of baseline and formative research (e.g. surveys, literature reviews and focus group discussions), process research (e.g. pre-testing of outputs) and impact evaluation, including social media assessments.
  • Support/contribute to (or where assigned, lead) the development of research plans for research activities, including research instruments and sampling design, fieldwork and fieldwork management to time, budget and high-quality standards.
  • Assist in facilitating, monitoring and commissioning (where necessary) of research activities (e.g. quantitative surveys, focus group sessions, panel studies, case studies, outreach activity assessments, capacity building assessments, social media research etc.), including negotiations on technical matters with BBC Media Action staff and external agencies.
  • Support the analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data, reporting and dissemination of research findings to both internal and external audiences, in order to help Project and Senior Management, Production and Training teams, Donor and Project partners to draw insights from the data that will be useful in the design and implementation of activities.
  • Support in organising and implementing research review processes for key research deliverables (designs, reports) with project stakeholders, with support and guidance from the Senior Research Officer(s) or Head of Research and Learning.
  • Assist in the supervision of research work of other team members (e.g. Assistant Research Officers) as well as contracted research agencies and freelancers.
  • Support the Senior Research Officer(s) and Head of Research and Learning, and where necessary act as a key focal point for improving the research skills of colleagues.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Minimum of a first degree in the Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, the Humanities or any other relevant field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience conducting research and evaluation for development projects or similar experience in conducting social/market research in any research agency and/or media and communication research.
  • The Research Officer will be an experienced quantitative researcher with demonstrable design, implementation and analysis skills.
  • Ability to plan and design quantitative research, and design and manage mixed method research.
  • Competent in quantitative research implementation, data analysis and reporting.
  • Knowledge and skills in social media/digital research design and evaluation is desirable.
  • Strong fieldwork experience, including in rural and geographically challenging areas.
  • Ability to undertake or manage fieldwork and adapt methods to challenging and resource-constrained conditions.
  • Good communication skills, and the ability to clearly communicate the findings of our research and what these insights mean for the users of our data.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of and application of ethical procedures in research.
  • Demonstrable understanding of cultural diversity and cross-cultural research within Nigeria.
  • A good grasp of, or enthusiasm to learn about, communication strategies and development issues.
  • Experience of writing precise and clear reports and briefing documents.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and good time management skills, with a track record of delivering research findings to deadline within a range of often conflicting deadlines, juggling priorities to meet research needs and objectives.

  • Transparent judgement and decision-making, and high level of professionalism.
  • Good IT skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and data analysis softwares such as SPSS, Atlas.ti, NVivo etc.

  • Ability to speak and write one or more of the following Nigerian languages: Hausa, Yoruba and / or Igbo.
  • Previous research experience working with NGOs or development projects would be an advantage.

4). Senior Producer, Nigeria

Job Purpose

  • The BBC Media Action office in Nigeria is looking for a Senior Producer who will be responsible for multi-media production activities in a multi-year, multi-component Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) programme focused on reproductive health and family planning in Northern Nigeria.
  • The Senior Producer will utilise their editorial expertise, programme production experience, and ability to oversee production activities, ensuring the quality and alignment of media outputs with the overall project objectives.
  • The Senior Producer will collaborate with other members of the production and training department to produce high-quality media (audio, visual, and digital) outputs.
  • The Senior Producer will be responsible for ensuring that the produced outputs fulfil thematic objectives whilst having the largest possible appeal within the target audience[s].
  • The Senior Producer is responsible for initiating and driving the entire production process of all media outputs, from concept development to the delivery of the final product.
  • The role reports to the Head of Production and will work closely with other producers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Head of Production and Training, and working with other producers and technical producers, ensure the design and delivery of radio, television and digital outputs from concept inception to post-production.
  • Conduct planning and budgeting to cover the entire output recording process: pre-production, production, and post-production.
  • Supervise teams of production staff as they pitch, write, report, record and edit original BBC Media Action content for publishing and broadcast across media channels.
  • Lead on ensuring that BBC Media Action’s production activities and outputs are as creative and impactful as possible in a dynamic and evolving media market.
  • Build the creative and editorial skills of other members of the production team to allow them to take on progressively greater roles in making editorial decisions.
  • Produce a range of social media, radio and television outputs that are creative, informative, and engaging.
  • Identify, organise and oversee the activities of writers, actors, programme contributors, technical producers, and other personnel throughout the production process, including contracting, logistics, scheduling, research, writing, recording, and editing.
  • Take the lead in the recording of media outputs on the production set. This involves ensuring that all necessary resources for the activity are provided and collaborating with other relevant staff to ensure a smooth production process. It also involves directing the recording and filming of the outputs.
  • Work with technical producers in the post-production process and ensure that the final product is delivered within established timelines.
  • Any other tasks assigned by Media Action to achieve project and organisational objectives.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Experience in producing engaging, creative content for radio, television and social media.
  • Creative writing skills in English and Hausa language.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and experience using these skills in a media production setting.
  • Evidence of imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the broadest possible audience appeal.
  • Strong understanding of the role of communications in development.
  • Demonstratable experience applying sound editorial judgement in producing radio, television and social media content.
  • Demonstrable understanding of BBC editorial values.
