1). Assistant Editor, WSL Africa Digital Production Hub

Job Purpose
- Following the re-organization of World Service Languages in line with our digital-first strategy, we are creating digital production hubs to produce high impact, original journalism for our audiences across the globe.
- The Assistant Editor of the Africa digital production hub will help the Senior News Editor lead a team of highly motivated correspondents, reporters and journalists to achieve our objectives of transforming our language services digitally, producing more high impact original journalism and reaching younger and more female audiences.
- You will be ensuring production of high quality and impactful content suitable for all of our platforms. Use of metrics will be key to monitor and improve performance.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- To support, and deputize when necessary, the Senior News Editor, Africa Digital Production Hub across a range of editorial and management responsibilities
- To commission and produce significant pan-region editorial projects, including exclusive original journalism, access journalism, digital specials and seasons when applicable.
- To Liaise with Newsgathering and Deployment Editors to make sure deployments and commissioning are carried out in the most organized and cost-effective way, identifying synergies, avoiding duplication
- To exploit recent technical innovations that make our visual storytelling more appealing to the younger audience
- To champion and optimize the unit’s output with relevant service editors, and be able to work collaboratively with other teams across BBC News
- To use data analytics tools as means of measuring growth against targets, assisting in day to day planning operations as well as strategic decision-making
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
- Proof of commissioning, developing and delivery high impact, news making content
- Experience of innovative solutions to storytelling challenges such as heavy data stories, untold stories and difficult analysis to aid audience understanding.
- Understanding demographic challenges and potential solutions to deliver key content to audiences of need
- Demonstrable experience in managing, directing and motivating staff, including in challenging and high pressured environments
- Thorough understanding of audience needs and digital media landscape in Africa
- Substantial experience of editorial innovation and proven editorial judgement

2). Video Journalist

Job Purpose
- As a BBC Broadcast Journalist you will work creatively across all digital platforms – audio, video and text – to ensure that the Yoruba Service output develops and grows a distinctive character and status in its target area.
- On a daily basis, you will engage actively with the audience ensuring consistency of output. You will be required occasionally to do field reporting as required.
- Shift work will be required which will include early mornings, late nights, weekends and public holidays.
- To create bespoke optimized content including social media posts, reports, compilations, interviews, discussions, ‘explainers’, features video, photos, infographics and other editorial content for social media networks and on all BBC Yoruba platforms.
- To ensure that any output material for which the post holder is responsible meets the standards required by the BBC.

- Work with other members of the Yoruba and Nigeria team, and the wider BBC Africa newsroom, to identify and produce creative and innovative audio, text and video news content.
- To originate innovative formats for BBC Yoruba social media posts best suited for each social network, including Facebook and Instagram and optimize these formats using social analytics and then champion the use of successful formats across the team.
- Re-version BBC material with a mobile audience in mind.
- To create multimedia content for publication on social media and the BBC Yoruba mobile audiences, as appropriate and to the required specification whilst maintaining professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and adhering to the BBC’s Editorial guidelines.
- Research, storyboard and produce stories.
- Create headlines and video teasers to promote our stories and reach to as wide an audience as possible.
- To show visual creativity in the use of pictures and graphics to illustrate and explain fast-moving events and complex stories.

- Knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential.
- You will have knowledge of and recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
- Ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.
Job Requirements:
- A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Yoruba
- In depth understanding of digital and social platforms – the BBC’s and others – and the different ways audiences are consuming news in Africa
- A strong journalistic track record with knowledge of Africa and African affairs.
- Experience in digital journalism content production and audience engagement.
- Ability to work well with other producers, reporters and teams.
- Wide and up to date familiarity with the area/s to which the Service broadcasts including Africa , Nigeria and West African affairs and an in-depth understanding of the area/s history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience. An extensive knowledge of the media situation in the target area and the way it is developing.
- Proven editorial judgment and flair, able to make sound decisions quickly.
- Knowledge of the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and commitment to the editorial aims of BBC News.
- Must be able to work well and calmly in a live newsroom environment; handle a rapidly changing news agenda, and have the temperament to enjoy the process.
- Must be able to demonstrate sense of visual awareness as well as technical aptitude.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety policies and practices.
- Experience in using video editing software similar to Q-edit or FCPX, Adobe Premier’.

4). Video Journalist, Hausa
Location: Abuja

Job Introduction
- The BBC World Service has grown its multimedia operations in Africa by doubling the number of language services from six to twelve and investing in modern TV and Digital production facilities.
- The BBC Hausa’s digital journalism is an expanding field and our ambition is for our content to reach underserved audiences – such as younger and female audiences and more diverse demographics across in West Africa and beyond.
- We are looking to recruit a video journalist based in Abuja to join the digital team in Nigeria.
- The journalist will be responsible for gathering and producing original video for our digital platforms.
- This is a fixed term contract for 6 months.
Main Responsibilities
- Reporting to the BBC Hausa Editor, the Video Journalist will be responsible for gathering and producing sharable original video for our digital platforms.
- You will be required to create short and medium form digital content and remote produce social and digital content produced by reporters so that the final output is of highest quality.
- You will be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people for video gathering in Nigeria and other African countries
Are you the right candidate?
- The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist and filmmaker, with a track record in originating, creating and curating social and digital content.
- An understanding of African current affairs and the audience needs is important.
- You will be able to use FCPX or equivalent video editing software and Photoshop to a high standard.
- Fluency in Hausa and English (written and spoken) is essential.
- The candidate must be a team player and should be ready to adjust to the requirements of field news reporting if and when required. A strong editorial and production background is also important.
- This role is based in Abuja but may require traveling to other locations.
