Job Title: Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Nigeria
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct subsurface exploration, including soil sampling, geophysical surveys, and borehole drilling at pipeline construction sites.
- Assess soil and rock properties, groundwater conditions, and other geotechnical factors that may impact pipeline design, installation, and stability.
- Evaluate terrain stability and identify potential geotechnical hazards such as landslides, sinkholes, or seismic activity.
- Provide recommendations for foundation design, excavation methods, trenching, and ground improvement for pipeline infrastructure.
- Prepare geotechnical reports that provide detailed site conditions, recommended material choices, and techniques for safe and efficient construction.
- Support the design of trenchless construction methods (e.g., Horizontal Directional Drilling) with respect to geotechnical findings.
- Develop and implement plans for slope stabilization, soil nailing, and retaining walls when required for pipeline projects.
- Oversee dewatering solutions and assess soil treatment techniques like compaction grouting or cement stabilization to improve the load-bearing capacity.
- Supervise the installation of monitoring systems such as inclinometers, piezometers, and settlement points to observe ground movements, groundwater levels, and other site changes during construction.
- Perform soil and material testing both in the laboratory and at the site to ensure compliance with geotechnical specifications and safety standards.
- Identify geotechnical risks, such as high-risk fault zones or soil instability, and implement mitigating actions to ensure the safe execution of pipeline construction.
- Analyze seismic risks, environmental hazards, and their potential effects on the project’s geotechnical design.
- Work closely with pipeline engineers, construction managers, and contractors to integrate geotechnical solutions into the pipeline design and installation processes.
- Prepare detailed and clear reports, drawings, and recommendations based on geotechnical site investigations, soil test results, and ongoing monitoring.
- Ensure all geotechnical work complies with local building codes, environmental regulations, and best practices.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5+ years] of experience in geotechnical engineering with a focus on pipeline construction, particularly in soil and foundation analysis, with experience in Knowledge of geotechnical investigation methods and standards, such as ASTM, ASTM D-1586, and Eurocode.
- Must be certified in the following areas of competence: Registered Engineer (COREN) or its equivalent, Certified Geo Technical Engineer, ArcGIS certified user, Certified PLAXIS/GEO5/Settle3D user.
