2). Business Development Partner

Location: Lagos

About the Role

  • Paystack works with some of the most ambitious and innovative businesses on the continent, and we don’t just help them accept payments. We help them grow. The Business Development Partner (BDP) role sits at the heart of that mission.
  • As a BDP, you’ll be at the frontline of Paystack’s growth engine. You’ll source and close new business, build enduring relationships with founders and business leaders, and help your portfolio of merchants unlock the full value of our platform, whether they’re a fast-scaling fintech or a beloved local retail brand. You’ll be assigned to a specific vertical (such as fintech, insurance, health, education, e-commerce, healthcare, airlines, etc.), and you’ll take full ownership of growth and retention within that space.
  • But this isn’t a typical sales role. BDPs at Paystack are trusted advisors to their merchants. You’ll be in the room for the strategic decisions that define how a business moves. You’ll analyse payments performance, spot drop-offs or failure points, and drive changes that boost revenue or reduce churn. You’ll champion your merchants internally and make sure Paystack is building what matters most to them.
  • To thrive in this role, you’ll need to close deals with confidence, build trust fast, and operate like an owner, constantly pushing for better outcomes for your merchants and your team. The best BDPs are endlessly curious about sectors, business models, customer behavior, and product potential. They can think long-term while acting fast. And they’re deeply motivated by the impact of helping African businesses succeed.
  • This is a fast-paced, externally facing role that blends sales, growth strategy, product thinking, and relationship management. You’ll work cross-functionally with some of the smartest people in the company, from product to engineering to risk, all in service of building the payments infrastructure that powers modern African commerce.
  • Looking for full ownership and a front-row seat to African commerce? Let’s talk.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Pipeline development: Actively identify, qualify, and prioritize leads within your assigned vertical. Use a combination of outbound sourcing, referrals, and market research to build a strong pipeline of high-quality opportunities.
  • Merchant pitching & deal closure: Drive end-to-end deal cycles from first contact through needs assessment, pitching, solution design, and final onboarding.
  • Portfolio management: Manage a portfolio of active merchants within your vertical. Understand their business deeply, identify opportunities for growth, and act as their internal advocate at Paystack.
  • Strategic account growth: Identify upsell and cross-sell opportunities by aligning merchant goals with the full range of Paystack’s offerings.
  • Data-driven insights: Analyze internal datasets and merchant performance to surface actionable insights. Translate payment trends into growth recommendations for both internal product teams and external stakeholders.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Risk & Compliance, and Support teams to unblock merchant challenges and shape Paystack’s roadmap through on-the-ground insights.
  • Thought leadership & vertical expertise: Become a domain expert within your vertical. Share insights with peers, speak at industry events, and represent Paystack in strategic conversations.

Requirements
What We’re Looking For:

  • You have experience in business development, consulting, account management, or strategy, ideally in a tech-enabled, high-growth environment.
  • You have strong commercial acumen and a bias for execution. You understand business drivers and are comfortable owning a commercial target.
  • You’re a natural communicator, whether in a pitch, a written brief, or a boardroom negotiation.
  • You’re curious and resourceful. You don’t wait to be told what to do; you proactively find answers and unlock opportunities.
  • You enjoy understanding how things work. You’ll go deep into Paystack’s tools and APIs to help merchants get the most from our platform.
  • You care deeply about customers. You’re not just solving for the sale, you’re invested in helping businesses succeed over the long term.
  • You’re organized, coachable, and able to manage multiple priorities without dropping the ball.

While this is NOT strictly required, it would be a plus if you:

  • have prior experience in payments, SaaS, or financial services
  • are familiar with CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, PipeDrive) and data analysis tools (e.g. Excel)
  • have experience working with merchants across different sectors or in a sales/client-facing capacity
  • are comfortable with analysing large amounts of data.
