1). UX Designer

About the Africa Visual Journalism Team
- The purpose of the visual journalism team is to unlock the potential of multimedia storytelling across all our platforms – desktop, tablet, mobile and TV. By using graphical tools and combining those of data and journalistic rigour, the team aims to produce powerful visual explanations that improve understanding of the news.
- Now we need a midweight Infographics and UX Designer to join the World Service team, which is a part of BBC News.
- You will be working with world-class UX & Infographics designers, social media designers, journalists, technical experts, and masters of motion graphics to create amazing digital storytelling experiences, in multiple languages to a global audience.
- We are not talking about 9 to 5. You will be at the heart of the action when a story breaks, working closely with senior team members to deliver experiences that resonate across BBC News. Wherever and whenever our audience encounters us.
- You will be collaborating with technical, editorial and product teams from across the BBC to create elegant, delightful experiences that transcend the barriers between old and new media. We are a global brand, our audience is international and we must deliver our designs and user experiences in multiple languages so we can reach all our users.
About you
- You have a record of outstanding infographics and UX work across various platforms, be they mobile, connected TV, tablet or desktop. And you have the portfolio to prove it.
- You might tend towards data visualisation, information graphics and mapping, or layout, colour and typography. Either way you will have skills you can use to create the ideal user experience. Maybe you have even got something special up your sleeve, like you are an amazing prototype builder, responsive design expert or 3D animator.
- You will have a keen interest in current affairs, a firm grasp of how design can make a story comprehensible compelling and relevant. You will also be able to pitch your work to people from all sorts of backgrounds.
- You are comfortable applying your skills to whatever situation arises, be it a new device or an unfamiliar design package. You have a great degree in design or the equivalent on-the-job experience.
Main Responsibilities
- Contribute design expertise to project teams made up of journalists, product managers and developers
- Communicate conceptual ideas and design decisions to project teams
- Collaborate with design colleagues to produce sketched concepts, user journeys, wireframes and navigational prototypes that reflect user needs
- Provide designs across multiple screens for projects that deliver coherent user experiences
- Ensure accurate data representation and accessible design solutions
- Deliver maps, charts, information graphics and visual identities to support daily output
- Develop the visual design and user experience and refine towards a polished design, taking into consideration typography, iconography, layout and brand identity
- Prioritise your own workload under guidance of other designers
- Deliver information graphics and user experiences that can be easily re-worked to accommodate multiple languages

2). Senior Journalist – Igbo Service

Main Responsibilities
- As senior journalist, you will be responsible for our Igbo output including editorial control, reporting, selection and compilation of material, production, leading teams as well as planning and implementing effective use of resources.
- With a keen eye, you will be on the lookout for interesting news items, with the confidence they will interest your target audience, attracting and engaging them to our platforms via websites and social media. You will be working from the Lagos Bureau, to create and publish on the day stories and original content for website and social media output; this may include scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content across a range of BBC outputs.
- You may undertake on-air reporting, including production and presentation of live or recorded programme on TV, radio and online.
- You’ll be responsible for allocating work to a team, checking their progress; ensuring the professional contribution of staff and journalism delivered is to a consistently high standard, whilst always seeking ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
- You will work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining the highest editorial standards and may be required to travel for work at short notice.
Requirements
- You will have considerable experience working as Journalist demonstrating high standards of editorial judgment, writing ability and production skills.
- You will be fluent in Igbo language, both written and spoken, and be able to communicate effectively in English.
- It is essential that you have good experience of data analysis within digital journalism and broadcasting.
- Having the ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, you’ll adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
- You will be experienced in finding ways to maximise opportunities offered by existing and emerging technologies to their fullest extent.
- A strong background in managing resources, staff, technical facilities and budgets, in order to make broadcasting in the most cost effective manner.

3). Broadcast Journalist – Nigeria (Igbo Service)

Job Introduction
- We are looking for a Broadcast Journalist to join us whose digital journalism skills are top notch.
Main Responsibilities
- As a BBC Journalist, you will work creatively across all digital platforms – audio, video and text to ensure that the Igbo Service output develops and grows a distinctive character and status in its target area.
- On a daily basis, you will engage actively with the audience ensuring consistency of output.
- You will be required occasionally to do field reporting when needed.
You will also be required to:
- Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards
- May be required to present the content on radio, TV or online -this might be live or recorded
- May include the production and presentation of programmes – this might be live or recorded
- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism
- To undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded – use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards
- To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld

Are you the right candidate?
- The successful candidate will have some experience within a media environment and of delivering creative output on online platforms.
- Knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential.
- You will have knowledge of and recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
- The ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.
We are also looking for someone who has:
- Fluency and up to date knowledge of Igbo (written and spoken) and the ability to type quickly and accurately
- Fluency in English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively
- Familiarity with video editing and writing for pictures and understanding social media
- Familiarity with news production systems, and a willingness to learn to operate new technology and to be able to adapt to different working methods
- The ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to a young audience
- Familiarity with the internet and an awareness of the potential of new technology
- A demonstrable interest in working in a multimedia environment and in encouraging audience involvement
- Familiarity with the region to which the Service broadcasts and an understanding of the region’s history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience
- A good knowledge of, and interest in, international current affairs, particularly in so far as they affect the target areas
- A good broadcasting voice and the ability to acquire the appropriate presentation style is desirable
- A willingness to understand and adopt the editorial aims and policies of BBC and to abide by BBC.
