The Fulbright U.S Student Scholarship Program 2024

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Fulbright creates connections in a complex and changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.

During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.  The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, individuals will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of the application deadline. Permanent residents are not eligible. Please review the specific Award Description in relation to the eligibility of dual citizens.
  • Applicants must have a conferred bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the start of the grant period.
    • In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement. If you are an Arts applicant and do not hold a BA, please email fbstudent@iie.org with your professional experience and educational history to confirm eligibility before beginning an application.
  • Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award to which they are applying and demonstrate sufficient competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country.
  • Applicants may hold a J.D. at the time of application.
  • Doctors of Medicine may receive grants for advanced academic study, but not for internships or residencies. Scholars with an M.D. degree who have completed their formal postgraduate training and propose attachment to a hospital or clinic for the purpose of independent or collaborative research should apply to the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Grants shall not authorize activity for which a license to practice medicine or nursing is required. The Fulbright Program cannot authorize proposals for medical research that involves clinical training, patient care or patient contact.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In general, there is a program preference for those who have not previously held a Fulbright grant. For the 2025-2026 competition, 2024-2025, 2023-2024, and 2022-2023 grantees will be at a competitive disadvantage, but are still eligible to apply, provided they continue to meet all other eligibility requirements of the program and their chosen award.
  • Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was undertaken primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Undergraduate study abroad experiences, either in the chosen host country or elsewhere, will not be considered a disadvantage.
  • Candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months, not counting undergraduate study abroad, are preferred. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section.
  • Candidates who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States will be given preference, provided their qualifications are approximately equivalent to those of other candidates.
  • For most programs, applicants who have had extensive, recent previous experience in the host country are at a competitive disadvantage but are still eligible to apply.

Grant benefits for all Fulbright U.S. Student grants include:

  • Accident & Sickness Health Benefits
  • 24/7 support line for urgent and non-urgent situations
  • 12 months of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status within the federal government
  • A stipend broadly based on the cost of living in the host country. These funds may be used by the grantee to cover to room, board, and incidental costs during the grant period.

Additional grant benefits for Fulbright U.S. Student grants to Post countries:

  • round-trip transportation to the host country
  • pre-departure and/or in-country orientations

Additional grant benefits for Fulbright U.S. Student grants to Commission countries:

Based on award and country, some grants may also include:

  • book and research allowances*
  • mid-term enrichment activities
  • full or partial tuition
  • language study programs

*Grantees with projects that require extensive research support, in-country travel, study materials, or equipment should explore additional funding from other sources to supplement the Fulbright funding.

Grantees may not receive duplicative funding:

  • Fulbright grant benefits may be reduced if they are duplicated by another grant.
  • Grantees may, however, retain those benefits not specifically covered by another grant (e.g. international travel).
  • No deduction will be made from a Fulbright grant for benefits provided by another grant, but not by a Fulbright grant.

All English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) receive an additional grant benefit: 60-hour online TESOL Fundamentals Course

  • This course must be completed prior to the pre-departure orientation in the United States for participants in Post countries or the in-country arrival orientation for participants in Commission countries.
  • Those ETAs who already have TESOL certification or equivalent coursework are exempt from completing this online course.

Renewal or 2nd-year English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) receive an additional grant benefit: 120-hour online course and 20-hour teaching practicum

  • This course must be completed during the grant period.
  • Those ETAs who already have TESOL certification are exempt from completing this course.

Accommodation for Grantees with Disabilities

  • As part of the pre-departure process, the Fulbright Program has developed a protocol to work with disabled grantees, on a case-by-case basis, as requested, to provide reasonable accommodations to facilitate the success of their exchange experience.

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship.

Eligibility:

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. To be eligible for a Gilman scholarship, an applicant must be:

  • A citizen or national of the United States;
  • An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions);
  • Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship;
  • In the process of applying to, or accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement;
  • Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or location with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System. It is important to note that certain areas within a country or location that has an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either Level 3 or Level 4; Gilman scholars will not be allowed to travel to these specific areas. Gilman scholars are unable to participate in programs located in a country or location — or an area within a country or location — that is designated as either a Level 3 (“Reconsider travel to”) or Level 4 (“Do not travel to”).

  • The Gilman-McCain August 2024 Deadline Application is open for applicants whose programs or internships start between September 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025. The application deadline is Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 11:59pm Pacific Time, and the advisor certification deadline is Thursday, August 8, 2024.
  • All applicants will be notified of their status via email in September 2024. All advisors will also be notified of scholarship recipients via email and will have access to the status of each student in their Gilman advisor account.

The Benjamin A. Gilman STEM Supplemental Award

In support of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the U.S. Department of State is dedicated to supporting students who are focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) fields (defined as agriculture, engineering, health professions, math and computer science, and physical and life sciences) during their higher education. Applicants who are conducting STEM-related research as part of their study abroad or international internship program can apply for a supplemental award of up to $1,000. The research must already be formally integrated into their credit-bearing program. A successful applicant should demonstrate (in an essay of no more than 1,000 characters) a strong motivation to their STEM field(s) and how this research experience extends beyond their time abroad, and into their future academic and career goals. Of note, the applicant is not required to major in a STEM field.

Allowable expenses for the STEM Supplemental Award may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lab fees
  • Equipment or gear required to conduct research
  • Hardware or software required to conduct research
  • Fees required to conduct research, such as internet, cell phone, or printing costs
  • Local transportation required to conduct research

Application Essays

There are three essays required as part of the Gilman application: the Statement of Purpose Essay and the two Community Impact Essays, which are the Building Mutual Understanding Essay and the Follow-on Service Project Proposal. For those applying for a Critical Need Language Award (CNLA) or for the STEM Supplemental Award, additional essays are required.

Essay Guidelines

  • Compose your essays first in a word processing program, and then upload the file to your online application. Please use 1-inch margins and Times New Roman 12-point font for each of your essays.
  • Your essay should be composed in paragraph format, not as numbered responses to the questions in the application.
    • The Statement of Purpose Essay is limited to 7,000 characters (including spaces).
    • The Building Mutual Understanding Essay is limited to 3,000 characters (including spaces).
    • The Follow-on Service Project Proposal is limited to 3,000 characters (including spaces).
    • The optional Critical Need Language Award essay has a 2,000 character limit (including spaces).
    • The optional STEM Supplemental Award essay has a 1,000 character limit (including spaces).

The Gates Scholarship 2024-25 in USA

The Gates Scholarship (TGS) is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to exceptional student leaders, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential.

Award

  • Scholars will receive funding for the full cost of attendance* that is not already covered by other financial aid and the Student Aid Index, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the methodology used by a Scholar’s college or university.
  • *Cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and transportation, and may include other personal costs.

Basic Eligibility

  • To apply, students must be:

    • A high school senior
    • From at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
    • Pell-eligible
    • A US citizen, national, or permanent resident
    • In good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)

    Additionally, a student must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US-accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.

    *For American Indian/Alaska Native, proof of tribal enrollment will be required.

Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate will have:

  • An outstanding academic record in high school (in the top 10% of his/her graduating class)

Financial Eligibility Details

  • In order to be eligible for the Daniels Scholarship Program, applicants must demonstrate financial need through Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $100,000 or less on the 2023 federal tax return on which the applicant is claimed as a dependent and review of other assets. If there are additional dependents, beyond the applicant, claimed on the 2023 tax return, we allow for $10,000 of additional income for each additional dependent.

The U.S. Rhodes Scholarship Award 2024/25

The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship awards in the world. Each year 32 young students from the United States are selected as Rhodes Scholars, through a decentralized process representing the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories. Applicants from more than 320 American colleges and universities have been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, even after a century of competition, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. The Rhodes Trust, a British charity established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, provides full financial support for Rhodes Scholars to pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom in partnership with the Second Century Founder, John McCall MacBain and other generous benefactors. Upon Cecil Rhodes’ death, the scholarships were created in 1902. The first Rhodes Scholars arrived at Oxford in 1903 and the first U.S. Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality/citizenship: You must be a citizen of the United States OR you must have been admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident, and must have maintained, and be expected to maintain, such legal status.
  • If you have been granted deferred action under the government’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program AND your status is currently active, then you are also eligible to apply if you meet all other criteria below. It should be noted that the Rhodes Trust makes no representations and does not offer any support regarding (a) the DACA applicant’s ability to travel to the U.K., and (b) the DACA applicant’s ability to return to the U.S. or to travel to another country upon conclusion of the scholarship; DACA applicants must assume this responsibility themselves. DACA applicants, like all others, must apply for the U.S. Scholarship or the new Global Scholarship, but not to both. Where there are risks of legal uncertainty, the applicant must make a determination.
  • Age: You must meet either of the below criteria:
  • i. You must be aged 18-23 on 1st October 2024 (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 2000 and before 2 October 2006).
  • OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
  • ii. You must be under the age of 27 on 1st October 2024 (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1997) AND you must also have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2023.
  • A university’s policy determines the date of completion of academic requirements for a degree and this may be different from when a degree is considered awarded by the university or the date of a graduation ceremony. In ambiguous cases, the decision of the National Secretary is final.
  •  Academic achievement: You must have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a Bachelor’s) by July 2025, and you must have an academic background and grade that – at a minimum – meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen course at the University of Oxford.
  • Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have: A GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher (with no rounding)

The Marshall Scholarship 2025

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to fifty Scholars are selected each year to study at the graduate level at a UK institution in any field of study.

As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programmes contributes to their ultimate personal success.

Eligibility: 

  • Open only to United States citizens who (at the time they take up their Scholarship) hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7. To qualify for awards tenable from October 2024, candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2022.
  • Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  • (By the time they take up their scholarship i.e. September 2025) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application. We do not accept rounded GPA’s.
  • Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2022.
  • Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.

The Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award 2024/25

This is a prestigious and competitive Simmons scholarship offered to students with exceptional academic achievements, a strong commitment to their community, and a passion for creating positive change in society. Scholars become part of a dynamic campus community that offers a multitude of opportunities for personal and intellectual growth, cultural exploration, and social engagement.

This scholarship is awarded for the duration of a four-year period of full-time undergraduate study, and supersedes any previously awarded merit scholarship.

Students applying for the Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award must meet the following criteria:

  • Apply as a first-year student for the fall semester
  • A minimum GPA of 3.50
  • A record of taking college prep, AP, or IB Courses
  • English Proficiency is required for non-native English speakers.
  • Standardized test scores (optional) of 28+ ACT or 1300+ SAT
  • Community Involvement: Applicants should showcase a history of active engagement in their community through volunteer work, leadership roles, or other forms.
  • Passion for the Field: Applicants should demonstrate a passion for their chosen field of study. This passion should be evident in their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and resume.
  • Students who meet the criteria above are often also interested in the Honors Program at Simmons.

Application process

  • The application consists of a formal essay in response to the prompt below, as well as a resume including activities and involvements. Students should submit their essays and resume in PDF or Word Doc via email with the subject line “Simmons Distinguished Scholar Award application” by December 1. Each page of the document should include the student’s full name and date of birth.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to submit a working file in the proper format (PDF or Word) as we will not convert or accept incompatible files (i.e. Google Docs, Pages, etc.)

Essay prompt

  • Formal Essay (of no more than 300-500 words): Write an essay in which you describe your leadership style, giving specific examples to show what kinds of experiences have crafted you as a leader, and what kind of leader you think you will become at Simmons.
  • Finalists chosen for scholarship consideration will be required to complete an interview in February.

  • Finalists for scholarship consideration will be notified in mid-January. Recipients will be notified by March 1.

The Schilizzi Foundation Scholarship (Academic Talent)

​​The Schilizzi Foundation Scholarship (Academic Talent) will support a Greek national student who has applied to study their undergraduate degree at UEA. Applicants can be enrolled on any undergraduate course at UEA including year abroad/year in industry courses, however, please note that the scholarship funding is only available for 3 years of study.

This scholarship is open to Home (UK) fee students and international fee students as applicants must be either Greek nationals (can be living in the UK) or born/resident in Greece.

UEA+Sport offers a wide range of facilities and support for our top athletes and sporting programmes, ensuring you have the best possible opportunities to maximise your potential whilst studying at UEA. Led by a strong team of dedicated and innovative coaching staff, and supported by a range of highly skilled practitioners, we offer you a high-quality level of support to enable you to succeed. Recent scholars have been successful in BUCS, Local, Regional and National competitions with many also attaining International success. This is achieved by ensuring each athlete can thrive in their own environment.

Our holistic and athlete-centred approach to developing performance has showcased success with many athletes competing at age-group and senior World and European Championships, and the BUCS programme rising nearly 20 places in just four years – with many teams dominating the local and regional landscape in their sport. We welcome applications from para-athletes and have a track record of supporting para-athletes on both our UEA Sport Scholarship and Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) programmes. Application Process

To apply for a UEA Individual Sport Scholarship, please fully complete the application form with as much information and detail as possible to assist us in assessing your application. We will notify you that we have received your application. If you aren’t contacted within seven days following a submission, please email performance.sport@uea.ac.uk to check the status of your application.

Please also be aware that new for this year’s intake of individual sport scholars we will be running a compulsory Scholar Induction Camp that will take place Wednesday 11 September 2024 until Friday 13 September 2024 (pre-arrivals and welcome week) – so please can applicants save these dates. More details on the camp will follow when sending individual scholarship offers.

The David Sainsbury Scholarships in Global Plant Health

​The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) offers the prestigious David Sainsbury Scholarships in Global Plant Health to a limited number of applicants on the MSc in Global Plant Health.

We have allocated all Full Scholarships for 2024 with the current budget but still have 35% Fee Scholarships available.

The David Sainsbury Full MSc Scholarship

Each full scholarship will cover up to:

  • the full cost of the tuition fee (£33,150 for 2024-25)
  • maintenance grant (exact value at the UKRI postgraduate researcher stipend level to be determined for 2024-25; in 2023-24 it was £18,622)
  • an additional £4,000 for travel costs (subject to valid economy class travel receipts)

Eligibility

  • You are eligible for a full scholarship under these terms if you meet all these criteria:
  • You are in receipt of an offer of a place on the UEA MSc in Global Plant Health
  • You are a national of or domiciled in a least-developed, low-income, or lower-middle-income country or territory as defined by the Overseas Development Agency Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list, version 2024-25 for entry in 2024-25 academic year.
  • There are a limited number of scholarships available and these will be awarded throughout the year, so you are advised to apply early.
  • The David Sainsbury 35% Fee Scholarship
  • Each 35% fee scholarship will cover up to up to 35% of the full cost of the tuition fee (35% of either £16,800 UK or £33,150 international fees for 2024-25), minus any other awards or scholarships you are in possession of that cover more than 65% of the fee.
  • You are eligible for a full scholarship under these terms if you meet all these criteria:

The Lesley Williams Masters in Nursing Scholarship

The Lesley Williams Masters in Nursing Scholarship will support a talented student nurse entering their second year of UEA’s prestigious Nursing Masters programme.

Applicants can be home or international students and must be in their first year of study during the time of application.

The University of Dundee GEMS Scholarship 2024/25

The University of Dundee GEMS Scholarship is awarded to students studying at a GEMS Education Schools whilst applying to an Undergraduate course at the University of Dundee.

Rice University Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies 2025

Rice University’s Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will offer doctoral application fee waivers for the Fall 2025 admission term to all eligible domestic and international students. This waiver will be available for students worldwide to request at the link here from Oct. 14 – Nov. 1, 2024, or until all available waivers have been issued.

The waiver does not apply to programs in the Jones School of Business.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent.
  • A completed application must be submitted by Nov. 27 at 10:59 p.m. CST; if an application is not submitted by this deadline, payment will be required.

Chevening Fully Funded Scholarships 2024/25

Chevening Scholarships enable outstanding emerging leaders from all over the world to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the UK. Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, we are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

When applying for Chevening, you will need to pass an eligibility checker before you can access the application form. The eligibility checker will check if you meet all of the eligibility requirements set out on this page.

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must: 

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory 
  • Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your scholarship ends. 
  • Have at least two years of work experience (2,800 hours). 
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme. 
  • Apply to three different and eligible  UK university courses. You must have received an unconditional offer from at least one of these course choices by the references and education documents deadline listed on the application timeline. 

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you: 

  • Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
  • Hold refugee status in a country not eligible for Chevening. However, if you are a citizen of an eligible country and hold refugee status in another eligible country, you are eligible for a scholarship.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Graduate Degree Program in Microbiology

Requirements:
  • The requirements for a PhD from the Department of Microbiology include successful completion of course work, teaching, one to two first-author manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, passing a preliminary examination, and writing and depositing a research thesis.
  • The Department of Microbiology at Illinois offers unique opportunities for graduate students to become skilled and creative microbiologists. Our graduate program of study leads to the doctor of philosophy degree (PhD.) We have outstanding resources in our internationally recognized faculty, graduate students, and research facilities. This exposes our students to the latest research techniques and fosters their development as independent scientists. The program has particular strengths in the areas of microbial physiology, metabolism, genetics, evolution, and pathogenesis.   • Graduates from the Department of Microbiology are employed in colleges and universities, industry, and government. Scientific advances in genetic engineering and biotechnology provide many opportunities in pharmaceutical, chemical, and genetic engineering companies.
  • The Department of Microbiology is a part of the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), which also includes the Departments of Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. The Department is part of an umbrella program in MCB that encompasses over 70 different research laboratories. Students admitted into any of these departmental graduate programs can select faculty thesis advisors from these active research laboratories in the School. Close ties are also maintained with the School of Integrative Biology, the School of Chemical Sciences, the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Admission

  • Applicants interested in the Microbiology PhD program will need to apply directly to the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) PhD programThe MCB PhD program is an umbrella program that requires admitted students to spend their first semester rotating among three different labs to explore their interests before joining one of our four departments.
  • MCB Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree in biological or physical sciences, a grade point average of a 3.0 or higher (A = 4.0), prior research experience and three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s academic and research background. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required. Applicants interested in pursuing a PhD in Microbiology should have a total of at least 15 credit hours of physical or biology sciences, including general biology, or microbiology, chemistry through organic chemistry and biochemistry, and mathematics through calculus. In addition to these requirements, non-native English speaking applicants must attain a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) overall score of 96, with at least a score of 22 on the speaking section. MCB does not accept the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to show English proficiency. Graduate College requirements also apply.

Graduate Teaching Experience

  • Experience in teaching is considered to be a vital part of the graduate program and is required as part of the academic work of all PhD degree candidates.  For the Department of Microbiology, a minimum of two semesters of teaching experience is a degree requirement.

Faculty Research Interests

  • Major areas of research interest include gene expression and regulation in bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes; virus pathogenesis and host-cell interactions; viruses of bacteria and archaea; membrane biogenesis; lipid and polysaccharide synthesis in bacteria and yeast; cell wall biogenesis; bacterial pathogenesis and bacteria-host interactions; immunology; DNA replication, recombination, and repair; anaerobic microbiology; the biochemistry and physiology of methane formation; mechanisms of oxygen toxicity; bacterial and archaeal genomics, ecology, and evolution. Facilities and Resources

  • The Microbiology Department is located in the modern Chemical and Life Sciences Laboratory (CLSL). Central to main campus, the CLSL houses all of the major equipment and expertise necessary for research in microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, genomics, and biochemistry.
  • The University of Illinois has excellent core facilities to aid in scientific research, many of which are located in buildings adjacent to CLSL. Each core facility has full-time salaried support staff for training and support. The Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center includes core research facilities supporting genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, flow cytometry, bioinformatics and translational medical research.  The Center for Microscopic Imaging is a campus-wide service center for electron, confocal, and light microscopy
  • Several services are available to graduate students for support outside of the classroom and laboratory. The University of Illinois library is the nation’s third largest university library, allowing access to reference books and on-line scientific journals. The Writers Workshop offers free, personal writing assistance for class assignments, scientific manuscripts, and theses. Financial Aid

  • All students admitted into the PhD program receive financial support throughout their graduate training. Incoming graduate students are supported by the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Several University Fellowships are awarded to outstanding applicants on a competitive basis. Financial support is usually in the form of a research assistantship, teaching assistantship, and/or fellowship. In addition to this stipend, we offer a tuition and service fee waiver. A health insurance fee and other miscellaneous fees, must be paid by the student.

The Louisiana State University Department of Biological Sciences Graduate Studies in Biochemistry

The Louisiana State University Department of Biological Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining world-class research programs and educating the next generation of international leaders in our field. Supported by a community of diverse, innovative and well-funded faculty and staff, the curriculums and programs we offer provide rich, invaluable research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students to help prepare tomorrow’s scientists for rewarding careers in education, medicine, research, business or the public service.

Degree Programs

  • The Department of Biological Sciences offers research-oriented M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry. Qualified students usually enter the Ph.D. program without first earning a M.S. degree. Requirements for the Ph.D. include appropriate coursework designed to provide broad but intensive training in biochemistry, experience in presentation of seminars and successful completion of qualifying and general examinations. The Ph.D. also requires formulation and execution of original research, as demonstrated by production of research publications and a dissertation. The M.S. requires a thesis and a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work, 24 hours of which must be in coursework. At least one-half of the minimum required credit in the M.S. program must be in courses at or above the 7000 level.

Program Overview

  • Graduate programs offered by the Department of Biological Sciences in the area of biochemistry prepare students for professional careers in biochemical research and teaching. Research interests within the department encompass a broad range, including cell and molecular biology, virology, plant biochemistry, enzymology, and protein, DNA, and carbohydrate molecular biophysics.

Facilities

  • The Department of Biological Sciences is primarily housed in the Life Sciences Building, that recently was expanded by a major addition, and Choppin Hall, which also houses the Department of Chemistry. The Laboratories are designed for conducting modern research in diverse fields including biochemistry and molecular biology; cell, organismal and integrative physiology; ecology, systematics, and evolutionary biology; plant biology; microbiology and molecular genetics. Several large facilities with technical help and state-of-art instrumentation facilitate research at LSU and include laboratories for Functional Genomics (DNA sequencers, real time PCR, Scan Array and Microarray equipment), NMR analysis and mass spectrometry (Kratos high-resolution, Finnigen tandem, and Bio-Ion Plasma Desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometers), and confocal, light and electron microscopy (in the Socolofsky Microscopy Center). Common instruments and facilities include tissue culture facilities, media preparation facilities, darkrooms, walk-in cold rooms, plant-growth chambers, animal facilities and aquatic facilities. Research support comes from the Louisiana State University Gene Probes and Expression Systems Laboratory, the Protein Facility, and the Macromolecular Computing Analysis Facility. The personnel of the Department of Experimental Statistics are available to help design experiments and analyze data.
  • The recent addition of a Beowulf cluster provides a computer system that will run at 2.1 TeraFlops, or 2.1 trillion floating-point operations per second. This would rank it among the six or seven fastest computers in the world, and second among academic institutions worldwide. Admission

  • Applications for graduate study are accepted at any time, but they are evaluated only after all supporting documents and credentials have been received. Applications should be initiated at least 7-9 months prior to anticipated entry. For Fall admission, we recommend applications be submitted by the end of the preceding year. By the time of admission, applicants should have earned a minimum of a baccalaureate degree with training in the areas our own undergraduates receive. These include courses in general and advanced biology (including genetics and biochemistry), inorganic and organic chemistry, calculus, introductory physics, and physical chemistry. Qualified students lacking one or two of these areas may remedy the deficiencies after admission. Applicants must score 100 (iBT) or equivalent on the TOEFL (for international students who have not received a degree from an English-based institution) to be considered for admission.

An overall GPA of at least 3.00 (“A” = 4.0) is required.

Financial Assistance

  • Teaching Assistantships and Board of Regents’ Fellowships are available from the Department. Research Assistantships are available from grant support to individual faculty members. All awards are competitive. Assistantships provide annual stipends ranging from $16,500 for M.S. candidates, and $19,440 base pay for Ph.D. students; the latter will be supplemented ($3,000 per annum) for the first four years of study (assuming satisfactory progress), which may be picked up by the major professor for the final years until degree completion.
  • To be considered for support for fall matriculation, applications must be completed by the end of the year preceding the year of admission.

The Louisiana State University Department of Biological Sciences Graduate Studies in Biological Sciences

The Louisiana State University Department of Biological Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining world-class research programs and educating the next generation of international leaders in our field. The Department of Biological Sciences offers research-oriented M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry. Qualified students usually enter the Ph.D. program without first earning a M.S. degree. Requirements for the Ph.D. include appropriate coursework designed to provide broad but intensive training in biochemistry, experience in presentation of seminars, and successful completion of qualifying and general examinations. The Ph.D. also requires formulation and execution of original research, as demonstrated by production of research publications and a dissertation. The M.S. requires a thesis and a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work, 24 hours of which must be in coursework. At least one-half of the minimum required credit in the M.S. program must be in courses at or above the 7000 level.

The Biological Sciences degree programs are designed to be flexible in order to meet the many of needs of students in the sub-disciplines of modern biology. This flexibility allows designing a program of courses that will benefit the student and his or her research needs.

Program Overview

  • The Biological Sciences degrees may be undertaken in any of the three Divisions within our Department: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (BMB); Cellular, Developmental, & Integrative Biology (CDIB); and Systematics, Ecology, & Evolution (SEE). Over 60 faculty have a wide range of research interests. The 130 graduate students in the department receive funding from a combination of departmental teaching assistantships, fellowships, and external research support.

Facilities

  • The Department of Biological Sciences is primarily housed in the Life Sciences Building that recently was expanded by a major addition, and Choppin Hall, which also houses the Department of Chemistry. The laboratories are designed for conducting modern research in diverse fields including biochemistry and molecular biology; cell, organismal and integrative physiology; ecology, systematics, and evolutionary biology; plant biology; microbiology and molecular genetics. Several large facilities with technical help and state-of-art instrumentation facilitate research at LSU and include laboratories for Functional Genomics (DNA sequencers, real time PCR, Scan Array and Microarray equipment), NMR analysis and mass spectrometry (Kratos high-resolution, Finnigen tandem, and Bio-Ion Plasma Desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometers), and confocal, light, and electron microscopy (in the Shared Instrumentation Facility). Common instruments and facilities include tissue culture facilities, media preparation facilities, darkrooms, walk-in cold rooms, plant-growth chambers, animal facilities, and aquatic facilities. Research support comes from the Louisiana State University Gene Probes and Expression Systems Laboratory, the Protein Facility, and the Macromolecular Computing Analysis Facility. The personnel of the Department of Experimental Statistics are available to help design experiments and analyze data, especially in ecological studies.
  • The recent addition of a Beowulf cluster provides a computer system that will run at 2.1 TeraFlops, or 2.1 trillion floating-point operations per second. This would rank it among the six or seven fastest computers in the world, and second among academic institutions worldwide. An initiative in Biological Computing is a part of this new investment by the State of Louisiana.

McCall MacBain Scholarships Program 2024/25

The McCall MacBain Scholarships are about much more than financial support. We believe in the power of community. This program brings together a diverse group of scholars who aspire to lead with purpose – individuals who have demonstrated leadership potential and an inner drive to make a positive impact in other people’s lives.

As a McCall MacBain Scholar, you’ll be able to pursue a fully funded master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University.

The scholarship covers:

  • Tuition and fees for the full normal duration of the master’s or professional program
  • A living stipend of $2,000 per month during academic terms
  • A one-time relocation grant for moving to Montréal

Scholars who are not pursuing an academic term during the summer may apply for up to $5,000 to pursue meaningful summer experiences.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for our 2025 cohort, you will need to meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • You are a current student on track to earn your first bachelor’s degree by August 2025
  • You earned your first bachelor’s degree in the last five years (January 2019 or later)
  • You earned your first bachelor’s degree more than five years ago, and are 30 years or younger in 2024

You will also need to meet the minimum degree and language requirements for McGill master’s program admission.

University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship 2024/25

Award Description: 
  • The University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship, normally valued at $1,000 per term for up to three terms, is awarded to graduate students registered full time in a Master’s or Doctoral program at the University of Waterloo. Eligible students must have a minimum first-class (80%) cumulative average in their current program or over the last two full-time academic years and be within the time limits of their graduate program. No application is required, graduate departments will nominate eligible students automatically based on their allocation of funds.

David Johnston – Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards

Award Description: 
  • Several awards are provided annually to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in any Faculty who participate in an international experience in Israel, including a minimally-paid or volunteer co-op work placement, a volunteer placement, or a study term related to academic requirements. Awards are valued at up to $2,500 – $10,000 each, and will be given on the basis of academic achievement, as well as the type and duration of the experience. Interested students, in good academic standing (normally a minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level; normally a minimum 75% average at the graduate level), who are planning to participate in an international experience in Israel are eligible to apply. Award selection will take place once per term. Students should apply as soon as they are able to confirm the details of their intended experience by one of the following deadlines: July 15, November 15, or March 15. These awards were established through the generous support of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Foundation in honour of former Waterloo President David Johnston, as a lasting tribute to his 11-year service to this university and in recognition of his passion for international opportunities for students.
