GIZ Nigeria – International cooperation between Germany and Nigeria commenced in 1974. GIZ was initially represented by an office in Lagos until 2003, but since 2004 it has maintained a country office and four project offices in the new capital Abuja. At present, GIZ has around 25 seconded staff, 100 Nigerian and regional experts, and four CIM experts working in Nigeria.

Our main commissioning party is the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
  • The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn. Our approximately 23,500 employees, almost 70 percent of whom are national personnel, work in a round 120 countries (July 2020) GIZ has worked in Nigeria since 1974. From 2004, GIZ has maintained a country office in the capital city Abuja. Currently 361 national and 66 international employees, 19 regional staff, 4 integrated specialists and 3 development workers are working in the country (June 2020).

Programme

  • GIZ EAT – a vibrant project for the ECOWAS regionThe BMZ funded regional project ECOWAS Agricultural Trade (EAT) is implemented by GIZ and officially started in January 2022 with a funding of 10 Mio. EUR for 5 years. The project management unit is based in Abuja. Major activities started in 2023 and focus on six West African countries: Nigeria, Niger, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso,and Ghana.
  • The objective of EAT is to improve institutional and technical requirements for intra-regional agricultural trade in the ECOWAS region and selected countries. The main partner is the ECOWAS commission (Directorates for agriculture, trade and customs), regional organizations and national line ministries or trade associations.
  • EAT works on 3 components:
    • Strengthen the role of the ECOWAS Commission in coordinating sustainable gender-sensitive agricultural trade instruments with ECOWAS Member States
    • Support sustainable gender-sensitive agricultural trade facilitation measures and services for traders at border posts and along agricultural trade value chains.
    • Improve regional agri-trade promotion services and business performance of the traders.
  • The target group of the project comprises trade companies, organizations and actors in agri-food sector trade in the ECOWAS region. The supported agricultural commodities are raw, semi-finished and finished products that are traded from farm gate, factory or warehouse to consumer markets.

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Familiarize with the context, objectives, and activities of the EAT project esp. with technical documents and reports, country related information and news updates relate to agri-trade
  • Support the project in documentation and knowledge management tasks, by improving the filing system, websites, templates and by editing texts.
  • Support in the day-to-day logistical, communicational, organizational, and technical tasks in collaboration with administrative and technical staff related to EAT activities
  • Support the team in the management of partner relations and communication e.g. with networks and political, academic, private sector and civil society partners by continuously updating and further developing a contact data base
  • Develop and introduce simple digital tools (based on Excel, MS Teams or other) to improve the internal team communication, organization, management, and collaboration for joint tasks
  • Proactively and continuously gather, summarize, and present information by analyzing economic, political and developments in the ECOWAS region and activities of partners and donors especially in the field of agricultural trade.
  • Support meetings with partners by providing logistical support, taking notes, and elaborating minutes
  • Prepare, design and quality check reports of project’s activities.
  • Support the efficient planning, organization and implementation of workshop and missions, e.g., through preparing documents and sharing information with participants, ensuring availability of material, support travel management and workshop registration of participants of workshops, assisting with travel cost reimbursement, support logistics.
  • Assist in project tasks of specific interest for individual learning processes and professional development.

Required Qualifications, Experience, and Competences
Qualifications:

  • Degree in Economics, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Business administration, or in a similar area
  • A postgraduate degree is an asset

Experience and Competences:

  • Good understanding of agricultural cross border trade between ECOWAS Member States, the role of the ECOWAS Commission and other regional and national project partners (Chamber of Commerce, Association, private sector) in trade facilitation and promotion as well as interest in and ability to learn about those topics
  • Experience working in the field of development cooperation, public sector, research, or with civil society organizations
  • Proven good working knowledge of ICT technologies and computer applications (e.g., MS Office esp. Excel and PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote).
  • Proven good knowledge of English language, both oral and written. Good knowledge of French is an added advantage
  • Good communication skills, fast learning, proactive, tactful, and sensitive in relating with people of different backgrounds.
  • A good team player who is willing to learn and take on responsibility.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to intervention areas of the programme (including other West African countries).
