About the Project
- The project “Integrated approach to climate change in the rice production system in Nigeria” (InACC) aims to contribute to climate change resilience and food security in rural areas of Nigeria.
- The Joint Action is jointly financed by the European Union (EU) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ as part of the Special Initiative ONE WORLD – No Hunger and the Global Programme Green Innovation Centre for the Agriculture and Food Sector, Nigeria (GIAE NG).
- Its objective is a concretization of the Special Objective 1 of the EU Action for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems which reads “agricultural innovations have contributed to climate change resilience, food security and close collaboration between small-scale rice producers and agro-pastoralists in selected rural areas in Nigeria” and contributes on a higher level to the Overall Objective of the Action for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems which reads “Improved food and nutrition security in partner countries”.
- The project objective will be achieved through the promotion of innovative, climate-smart and locally adapted agricultural practices, the development of agro-enterprises and an integrated land resource management approach.
- Furthermore, considering that innovations are often not adopted or sustained on a wide scale, the project focuses on capacity building among small-scale rice farmers and on income and productivity improvement under environmentally friendly conditions and addressing climate change.
- In addition, special attention will be given to trade and enterprise development to create extra income and strengthen collaboration between farmers and agro-pastoralists who are often in a dispute over natural resources.
- This will help to mitigate tensions and to address the extra labour and capital needs (investment and maintenance) that most innovations require.
- Finally, the project promotes a research approach as an innovation mechanism to identify and address challenges (technological, social, ecologic, economic, institutional) that prevent the adoption and sustainability of innovations.
- The two targeted states of the project are Nasarawa and Benue State where project implementation activities focus on small-scale rice farmers and agro-pastoralists (including youth and women).
- The final and direct beneficiaries of the project activities are small-scale rice men and women farmers, men and women agro-pastoralists and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the targeted agricultural communities.
